Kenneth Charles Fortunah, known as Mr. Ken is a professional educator and IB Educator currently working in Beijing, China. Mr. Ken comes with a wide variety of educational experiences working in both the public school and private charter school systems in N.J.-N.Y.C. starting from 2002 before moving to China in May, 2014. While in undergraduate college as a Business Administration Major, Mr. Ken founded the Student Volunteer Center and was the Literacy Coordinator for the Newark Public School Systems which oversaw after-school placement of student teachers who wanted to gain experience from Sophomore year.
Mr. Ken continued to work on the side as a tutor and later made a switch into full time teaching and became an administrator at a Kindergarten. Mr. Ken was mentored by experienced grant writers and program experts with Common Core expertise leading to him writing for the school and gaining several grant approvals including inner city funding from the NJ State Government and the Federal Government. Mr. Ken continued to grow and got into Special Education teaching and quickly moved from being a special ed. paraprofessional/ shadow teacher to a Substitute Teacher while developing community programs in the evening for inner city youth.
Mr. Ken became a substitute teacher and obtained his license in both NJ and NYC.
Mr. Ken continued under the substitute teacher license and moved to China and became first a subject teacher at Beijing New Talent Academy and was rapidly promoted to first Curriculum Director of the Primary School serving 32 classrooms and 1042 students. One year later, he was promoted to the Foreign Academic Supervisor which was equivalent to the Vice-Principal role in an international school.
After working at Beijing New Talent Academy for 5 years, Mr. Ken got married to a Chinese National and they moved to Shanghai for 4 years. Over that time, Mr. Ken went on to be a Grade Level leaders from 2019-20 and then moved to Soong Ching Ling School where he was both a homeroom teacher for 3 years and the Science Coordinator for 2 years.
In August, 2023, Mr. Ken and his wife moved back to Beijing where Ken is currently employed as the 5th Grade Homeroom Teacher and teacher in charge of Grade 5. Mr. Ken has obtained a variety of certifications and PD workshop hours in handling different kinds of behaviors, counseling students and coaching families. Mr. Ken is well trained in Verbal De-escalation and Physical Intervention (CPI Certification), Mental Health First Aid (NYC Mental Health Board) , mentored by State Certified Behaviorist and Special Education PhD Educator while working at the Irvington Middle School back in the US for 2 years.
